An Island Far From Paradise
Haiti as a microcosm of world poverty

Sr Judy Dohner, HM
Missionary and Administrative Director, St Damien Hospital, Haiti

Haiti, a Caribbean island that lies less than 2 hours by plane from the United States, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. 80% of the population lives on less than $400/year. Over half the children die from malnutrition before their fifth birthday. This presentation will offer information from a missionary Sister who has worked in Haiti for six years. She will discuss why Haiti has become so poor, what the consequences of such poverty are, and what is being done and can be done to alleviate the suffering.

Sr. Judy Dohner is a member of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and a missionary to the community of Fondwa, Haiti where she lives with and supports the local Sisters of St. Antoine. She serves as a Registered Nurse in the Fondwa Medical Clinic. She assists Executive Director of the Association of Peasants of Fondwa with strategic planning, on-going projects and program assessment, and development of new programs.

Sr. Judy previously worked in Haiti as Administrative Director of NPFS/St. Damien Hospital in Petionville and On-Site Program Director of Hope for Haiti in Port au Prince and Naples, Florida. She was educated at the University of Akron and Ohio State University and has roots in Lorain as the Hospice and Oncology Program Director of St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center in the 1980s.
